TCAP scores are in, and while there’s some progress still 60% of 3rd grade children are not proficient in reading and math.
This alarming statistic isn’t just a number—it represents thousands of children who may well struggle to succeed for the duration of school and beyond.
The key to turning this around is ensuring more children get a strong start throughout their first 8 years of life.

Dear legislator,
2023-24 TCAP scores are in, and while there’s some progress, still a heartbreaking number of our 3rd grade children — 60% — are not reading and doing math at grade level. And we know that many of them arrive to kindergarten already behind.
For things to change meaningfully, we need a statewide focus on early care and education. It’s time to prioritize investments in young children so they can get a strong start in life.
I urge you to be a champion for young children in state budgeting and legislative decisions. By focusing on early childhood development, we have a unique opportunity to change this trajectory and build a stronger future for our state.
Thank you for your consideration and for your service to the state of Tennessee.
